Edwardian Sterlings

Sterling imitations with 'English' legends

Imitation with English legend.

This group of coins closely copies the English sterlings in style as in legends. Some crude, others are of excellent style.
Large quantities are known and therefor it is almost impossible to think that these are minted in England. It was too dangerous to illegally strike coins on a large scale. Also the English authorities had no doubt that anonymous copies were coming from abroad.
It is almost impossible to attribute these imitations to a certain mint, but Kuinre could be a an option.

More info can be found in the books by Mayhew and Chautard.

Extra info:About 10 coins are known, all from the same dies. Analysis suggests they are made principally of tin. Probably all these coins come from the same find in Thonberg near Leipzig, Germany, in 1881 and reported by Dannenberg in Zeitschrift für Numismatik 11, 1884, p882. This is an other example from a German private collection.
